What is ISO 26000 all about?

From 2005 to 2010, the ISO Working Group has done a great job in developing a 100-page document. It explains – in many instances in great detail – how social responsibility can be understood and what “… an organization should…” do. The most important clause 6 describes the core subjects identified by the Working Group:

  • Organizational governance
  • Human rights
  • Labour practices
  • The environment
  • Fair operating practices
  • Consumer issues, and
  • Community involvement and development.

The 26k-user-guide with itUGuide intros inherent 26k-issue- tool is
the generally applicable user guide. It assists in quickly identifying the relevance of ISO 26000 core subjects and issues, and is available in these languages:
English, Spanish, French, German, Czech, and Chinese.

A recommendation is added on how to derive from one of these languages a readable copy of the
26k-user-guide in any other language, by a very few
clicks, using the Google translation function.

IFAN, the International Federation of standards users, recommends the application of this user guide including its tool, see

User guide for European SMEs: Next to this generally applicable user guide NORMAPME, the European organization for standardization issues of small and medium enterprises, offers – from end of July 2011 onwards – the NORMAPME ISO 26000 user guide for European SMEs, which focuses on those core subjects and issues of ISO 26000 which may be relevant to SMEs in Europe. Reference is made to an e-mail from ISO Central Secretariat of 1 July 2011, considering this user guide as an interesting complement to ISO 26000. For this SME user guide please go to this site.
